Recycled 3D Printer Filament
ReClaim and Re-Use with MakerGeeks
July 25th, 2016 - For Immediate Release:
Oh happy day to you... all you Makers out there... hope the week is going great and you are having a productive summer so far. Hard to think that it's almost back to school time - this year is flying by that's for sure!
Well, I had something on my mind today and wanted to share with you some thoughts on our industry of plastic manufacturing; in a word TRASH... oh man, the waste we as plastics manufactures generate is pretty epic. As an industry around 20% of the finished product is waste ... from machine clean outs to material changeovers to just 'dialing in' new product runs we see a lot of waste.
Our shop is ahead of the pack as an industry with only about 10% of our 3D filament manufacturing finding its way to the dumpster - however think about some raw numbers... if we process say just an average of 30,000lbs of 3D filament each month then 10% of that is 3,000lbs of wasted plastic EACH MONTH... that's crazy talk and horrible for the environment.
Something needs to be done, and to be honest... nothing is being done at all; as an industry the 3D printer filament manufactures are just taking this 'waste' as a part of the business.
Well, not anymore and not after today... MakerGeeks.com and our manufacturing plant in Springfield, MO is taking this scrap, separating it daily into large containment bins for PLA, ABS, HIPS, Raptor Resin, PETG or others and then using our shiny brand new plastics granulator (waahhooo, new equipment glow over here!!!) and we are granulating this into raw plastic pellets again so we can re-extrude this plastic into usable high-tolerance 3D printer filament.
These re-claimed pellets have to be cleaned and re-dried to negative 40f dew-point for over 10hours in order to produce the highest tolerance filament just like all our filaments but what you'll be left with is a 3D Filament line that will be producing only a fraction of a % of waste and will be cutting our landfill foot print to nearly ZERO.
Not only all this but MakerGeeks.com has made a commitment to donate [1] tree planted with the Arbor Day Foundation with each spool of reclaimed 3D printer filament sold ... so each spool you buy keeps 2.2lbs of plastic out of the landfill AND also gives our planet one extra tree for future generations to enjoy! Talk about a WIN - WIN!!
MakerGeeks has been looking to offer this service honestly since we started but until now the cost to add these machines and processes to our plant had financially looked like, well... Mt. Everest - but with recent growth the investment timing was perfect so we jumped in with both feet and we are BUZZING with excitement on this new project!!
Thank you again for all you as Makers do out there in the community and THANK YOU for using MakerGeeks and our Maker Filament brand 3D printer filaments for those amazing projects. I hope the RE-Line of 3D Filaments will be a blessing to you as well as draw a line in the sand for other 3D Printer filament manufactures both here and abroad to watch the waste, keep an eye on that dumpster and maybe help to start a dialog at their plants to talk a little trash!!
Have a great day and keep Making amazing stuff!!!
